Could the world be run on solar power?

It’s widely acknowledged that the vast majority of currently used fossil fuels are running out, so much so that some scientists predict that we will be bereft of these fuel sources inside a century.

Its time to look at other forms of power, everyone agrees on that. One of the most viable long term solutions to the forecast power shortfalls is the widespread implementation of Solar Power.

As a comparison , the Solar Energy that hits a square mile in a year is the energy equivalent of over 4 million barrels of oil.

Rochdale Council announce first public owned commercial solar plant

Rochdale Borough Council have recently broken ground on what is to be the UK’s first publicly owned commercial solar farm. In its quest to become the UK’s most environmentally green local authority, the Council have undertaken a project to develop a sector of waste ground into a 250 kWp commercial solar plant.

Ikea to continue solar sales

Swedish Flat-pack giant Ikea started a partnership with Chinese thin-film solar manufacturer Hanergy to bring easy Solar PV to domestic properties across the UK. Government promises “Rocket Boosters” for UK commercial solar

Minister for climate change, Greg Barker, has announced plans to boost the growing uptake in commercial solar installations in the UK. Speaking to representatives at the British Photovoltaic Association’s Commercial and Domestic Rooftop Solar recently in the capital, Mr Barker echoed his long repeated statements on the importance of Solar Power to the UK and the governments desire to continually increase uptake of commercial solar power for UK roofspace. Two Thirds of Europe’s solar power plans to come from UK

New data released by the research firm IHS, details that up to 69% of the planned solar installs across 2014 and 2015 throughout Europe are planned to take place in the UK. Approximately 7 gigawatts of solar pv are planned to be installed across Europe of the coming 18 months. Commercial Scale PV generates £13.5million in 2012

Commercial-scale Solar PV projects are estimated to be generating £13.5million worth of electricity a year according to the latest research poll.

Research carried out by an independent energy company revealed that the many commercial-scale independent Solar projects of over 50kw, that are operating in the UK at the end of 2012, account for 322MW of its capacity.

Renewable Energy Developer’s account for 59% of the total energy being generated by the sector with 13% coming from onsite generators and landowners alike and a  further 7% is accounted for by the agricultural sector. Read the rest of this entry »
